BHUBANESWAR: Adopting a zero tolerance to drunk driving, the commissionerate police have warned of stringent action against violators. The police have decided to blacklist vehicles of habitual drunk drivers and cancel their driving licences permanently. The transport department will be moved to stop issuing them fresh DL.
As per the Section 167 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, vehicles involved in repeat traffic violations can be blacklisted and banned from plying on roads.
“We have adopted a zero tolerance to drunken driving. The law is stringent for repeat or habitual offenders. We will recommend the regional transport officers to blacklist the registration of vehicles of habitual drunk drivers,” commissioner of police Sanjeeb Panda said.
Police said they will track the habitual drunken drivers through the e-challan database. Once a vehicle is penalized, its details are stored in the database. The device can detect the same vehicle number quickly if cops catch it for a second and multiple offences.
“We launched a campaign under the banner of ‘my road my safety’ last month where we intensified enforcement drive against serious traffic violations including drunken driving, wrong-side driving, jumping red light signals and using mobile phones while driving. At least 232 people in Bhubaneswar and 81 in Cuttack were arrested for drunken driving,” Panda said.
Police registered FIRs (100 in Bhubaneswar and 38 in Cuttack) against 138 drunken people and seized their vehicles. Their DLs were suspended for three months.
“We seized altogether 881 vehicles in connection with various traffic related offences in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack last month. Over 600 DLs were sent to the RTOs for suspension. We request citizens to follow the traffic rules and treat them as a duty towards the society,” additional commissioner of police Awinash Kumar said.
According to deputy commissioner of police Prateek Singh the objective is to make the streets safer for citizens. Singh said drunken drivers always pose a threat to others on the roads whereas anti-social elements often commit crimes under the influence of alcohol.
