Pravasi Bharatiya Divas strengthens the bond between India and its diaspora: PM Modi
BHUBANESWAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, marking an important event for the Indian diaspora.
In his address, Modi highlighted that this year's PBD is special, coinciding with the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who played a key role in establishing PBD as a pivotal event for the Indian diaspora.
The Prime Minister shared how Odisha reflects India's rich heritage, with its historical sites like the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, the Sun Temple in Konark, and the ancient ports. He also emphasized the importance of peace, mentioning Dhauli as a symbol of the path taken by Emperor Ashoka.
Modi urged that this legacy inspires India to tell the world that the future lies in Buddha and not in war. Therefore, he remarked that welcoming everyone to the land of Odisha is very special for him.
“The great land of Odisha, where we have gathered, is a reflection of India's rich heritage”, exclaimed Modi. Noting that hundreds of years ago, the traders and merchants from Odisha undertook long marine voyages to places like Bali, Sumatra and Java, the Prime Minister said that Bali Yatra is celebrated even today in Odisha in its memory.
Modi reiterated that the Indian diaspora is integral to India’s global stature and referred to them as ambassadors of India, adding that he cherishes the interactions he has with Indians worldwide. He expressed pride in India’s accomplishments, including lifting 250 million people out of poverty and advancing as one of the world’s largest economies. He also celebrated India's achievements in space, digital infrastructure, and defense, including the “Made in India” fighter jets.
The Prime Minister highlighted India's growing global role and its contribution to amplifying the voices of the Global South. He applauded the Indian diaspora for their contributions to host countries and pointed out that India’s skilled youth are highly valued abroad. He reaffirmed India's commitment to providing safety, welfare, and support to the diaspora, citing the expansion of embassies and consulates worldwide.
Modi also urged efforts to preserve and showcase the stories of the diaspora, such as the long-standing communities in Oman and the Girmitiya brothers and sisters who migrated to various regions. He proposed setting up databases and conducting research into their legacies. Additionally, he mentioned the significance of heritage tourism, with special trains and initiatives like the Pravasi Bharatiya Express that will take people to historical and faith-related destinations in India.
Modi urged the diaspora to support India’s progress by connecting with the nation's heritage, purchasing Indian-made products, and promoting India’s true history abroad. He encouraged younger members of the diaspora to take part in the "Bharat Ko Janiye" quiz and explore India through educational programs.
In his concluding remarks, Modi emphasized the importance of strengthening India's global connections and wished everyone a prosperous 2025. He also urged the diaspora to contribute to India's development by planting trees in their mothers' names, symbolizing a commitment to India's future growth.
