Women To Join Odisha Fire Service: CM Majhi

BHUBANESWAR: The state government has decided to appoint women into the Odisha Fire Service, marking a significant step toward gender inclusivity. This announcement was made on Wednesday by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, following a proposal by deputy chief minister Pravati Parida.

Parida’s suggestion came during an event where 941 newly recruited firemen were given their appointment letters.

Parida emphasized the importance of eliminating gender discrimination within the fire service, highlighting the achievements of women in various fields, including the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.

She argued that if women can serve in these demanding roles, they should also have the opportunity to work as firefighters in Odisha. The Chief Minister fully supported her proposal, directing the concerned department to begin the process of amending recruitment policies to allow women to join the fire service.

In addition to this progressive decision, CM Majhi reiterated the state's commitment to strengthening disaster management capabilities by enhancing the Odisha Fire Service. The central government has approved Rs 201.10 crore for modernizing and expanding fire and emergency services in the state, while the Odisha state government has allocated Rs 394 crore to upgrade the fire service wing.
